Japan → Los Angeles: service and transit time

The Port of Los Angeles is the largest gateway on the US West Coast, and several carriers run direct transpacific services from the main Japanese ports. It is also the starting point for rail and truck connections into the US interior, so it serves inland destinations as well as the West Coast itself. Transit is around 14–20 days, varying by carrier, schedule and season. Delays can occur due to weather, port congestion or omitted calls.

Besides the direct sailings, we can offer transhipment services that transfer at a nearby hub port. Transhipment takes longer than a direct sailing, but sailings are more frequent, space is easier to secure and the freight cost can be lower. Tell us whether you want to prioritise transit time or cost and we will adjust our proposal.

40HC ocean freight rates to Los Angeles and what moves them

Los Angeles carries the heaviest volumes on the US West Coast, and space is fought over in the run-up to the year-end retail season. In years when port labour negotiations are in the news, that alone can move rates. Note too that when inland rail is congested, inland costs can jump even while ocean freight is steady.

We compare rates from multiple carriers side by side and present the best available at that moment. Card payment is supported, so you can book without straining your cash flow.

Ports, customs and inland transport for USA

Volumes are high, and in peak season port congestion can cause demurrage and detention. US-bound shipments require advance filings such as ISF (10+2) and AMS, and incomplete paperwork causes delays and penalties.

We will guide you through the required documents and deadlines, so please ask even if this is your first shipment to USA. For inland destinations, confirming drayage and onward transport in advance makes the schedule easier to plan.

SOC container also available

Equipment turns over reasonably well on the US West Coast, so carrier-owned containers (COC) are normally fine. SOC containers become an option for inland destinations with return constraints.

Other routes in N. America West

We also handle other routes to N. America West. If the destination is not yet fixed, we will compare options on the all-in cost including the inland leg.

Frequently asked questions

How long does Japan to Los Angeles take?

14–20 days is the guide. It varies with carrier schedules and peak-season congestion, and delays can occur due to weather, port congestion or omitted calls. Confirmed schedules are provided with your quote.

Is Los Angeles or Long Beach faster?

The two ports are adjacent and there is no practical difference in transit time. Which one your cargo calls at is decided by the carrier service, so we propose whichever is better on rate and schedule. Let us know if your consignee has a preference.

Can you carry to inland cities such as Chicago or Dallas?

Yes. We can discharge at Los Angeles and move the container by rail to an IPI (interior point). The inland leg depends on rail congestion, so allow extra time on top of the port-to-port transit.

When is the ISF (10+2) filing due?

It must be filed at least 24 hours before the vessel departs the port of loading. Late or inaccurate filings carry penalties, so consignee and manufacturer details need to be ready before shipment. We will guide you through the paperwork.

What is the maximum payload of a 40HC?

Internal capacity is roughly 76 cubic metres and the maximum payload is up to 26.5 tonnes (this can differ by carrier and equipment). Send us your cargo details and we will advise the right container and an estimate.
