Container Shipping from Japan to Tajikistan
Rail & Mountain Truck Route to Dushanbe
Tajikistan is landlocked, so cargo travels by sea from Japan to Qingdao or Tianjin, crosses China westward by rail, and then goes by truck from Kashgar over the Kulma Pass and other border gateways to Dushanbe and Khujand. Parts of the route run through mountain terrain, so we match the corridor and inland mode to the weight and dimensions of your cargo and propose the best routing and transit time.
SOC (no-return) containers are also available, for cargo such as used vehicles, construction machinery and tyres, with a typical transit time of one month to six weeks. Contact us once you know the commodity and destination city.
* The route shown is indicative. Actual transit points and modes of transport may change depending on carrier schedules and customs conditions.
INLAND LEG
The inland leg: Qingdao / Tianjin to Dushanbe
Cargo for Tajikistan rides the railway from the Chinese coast to Kashgar in Xinjiang, then crosses the mountain border by truck to Dushanbe and Khujand.
ROUTE & BORDER
Ports and border gates
After discharge at Qingdao or Tianjin, cargo moves by rail to Kashgar, then by truck over the Kulma or Karamyk pass. A routing via the Oybek border on the Uzbek side is also available.
TRANSPORT MODE
Rail or truck
The route includes mountain roads above 4,000 m, so choosing the right vehicle for the weight and shape of the cargo matters. We design the rail-truck combination shipment by shipment.
TRANSIT TIME
Typical transit time
Allow roughly one month to six weeks in total. The mountain passes are weather-dependent, so we recommend building in some buffer.
Transit times are indicative and vary with vessel schedules, border congestion and season.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions: shipping to Tajikistan
How does customs clearance work?
We handle export customs clearance in Japan and the transit formalities in the countries en route. Tajikistan is not an EAEU member, so each transit country has its own formalities — we give you the complete document list in advance.
Do the containers have to be returned locally?
Carrier-owned (COC) boxes must be returned. They are also restricted or costly to take inland, and detention charges add up quickly. For a landlocked destination like Tajikistan we recommend a shipper’s owned container (SOC) — there is nothing to return. See our SOC container service.
What kinds of cargo can you handle?
Used vehicles, construction machinery, tyres, industrial equipment and general cargo. We also advise on packing and lashing suited to mountain transport.
What do you need for a quote?
Tell us the commodity, the quantity (number of containers or volume), your preferred timing and the destination city. One-off and small shipments are welcome too — reach us via the contact form.

Cargo is discharged at Qingdao or Tianjin, moves by rail to Kashgar in Xinjiang, then crosses by truck via the Kulma or Karamyk pass (or the Oybek border on the Uzbek side).

Rates vary depending on origin port, container type, route and inland destination. Contact us via the contact form for the latest quotation.
SOC CONTAINER
We can also arrange SOC containers
For inland destinations such as Tajikistan, carriers expect their containers back, so a COC booking can be declined or priced heavily. With a shipper’s owned container there is nothing to return.
No return, no detention
Nothing has to go back to an inland depot, so detention and demurrage do not arise.
Reach where carriers won’t go
Regions where carrier boxes are restricted can still be served on a door basis.
A second life on arrival
The container can be reused as storage at destination, or sold locally.
